Passage from the Periplus
After Bakare comes Red Mountain, as it is called, and another region extends . . . called the Seaboard, directly to the south. Its first stopping place, called Balita, is a village on the coast with a good harbor. After this comes another stopping place called Komar, where there is a little settlement and a port; in it men who wish to lead a holy life for the rest of their days remain there celibate; they come there and they perform ablutions. Women, too, do the same. For it is said that at one time the goddess remained there and performed ablutions. (from the Casson translation)
